Antoine Picard (Google Software Lead)

Antoine Picard is a Software Engineer on Google’s engineering education team. He has worked on a variety software development tools that keep Google’s engineers productive including testing infrastructure, code review, bug tracking and Q&A. He has also developed several courses for both internal and external technical education. In addition, he has conducted nearly 500 technical interviews for candidates for software engineer and software engineer in test roles and run interview training sessions on several college campuses.

Antoine Picard Google Antoine Picard is the Technical Lead of the unit testing team. Antoine’s team is responsible for providing Google’s developers with the tools they need to write unit tests and with fast and accurate test results at every change list. Antoine authored the first-ever edition of Testing on the Toilet and is now one of a handful of regular contributors.

 

Arjun R Pillai (Head of Data Strategy, FullContact Inc.)

After graduating as an engineer in 2010, Arjun started his career with Infosys. Following his dream of ‘doing something of his own’, he founded Profoundis. Profoundis made Vibe – a person and company data service, grew to 100,000+ users and 260 companies. Arjun led the team from a team of 4 to 72 raising a couple of rounds of investment from India and Silicon Valley. Finally, the company was sold to FullContact Inc (Denver, USA).

Arjun is a graduate from Microsoft  Ventures, Startup Chile and Blackbox Silicon Valley accelerators. He also serves as an advisor for Founder Institute, Denver and for a handful of startups. He is also a TedX speaker, volunteer for IEEE for 11 years including several global international committee roles.

After the acquisition, Arjun serves on the leadership team of FullContact Inc as the Head of Data Strategy. His mantra for life is ‘Learn as much, Pay it Forward and Leave the World’.

 

Carolyn Andrews (CEO at Inspired Leaders Now)

Carolyn Andrews is the owner of Inspired Leaders Now, a certified business and executive coach, international speaker and author. Her business experience ranges from Fortune 100 companies to organizations with less than 50 staff members. She is recognized as an outstanding business strategist and leader.

As a leadership expert and executive coach, Carolyn is instrumental in implementing strategies and building relationships that positively impact growth, increase effectiveness, improve operational efficiency and help owners and executives realize their dreams! She is an experienced senior executive leader with over 15 years of experience in small business management including starting new businesses and coaching existing businesses.

 

Jefferey Voas (IoT and TrustI,EEE Reliability Society)

Jeffrey Voas is one of the two co-founders of Cigital (cigital.com). He is a computer scientist at the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, MD. Voas co-authored two John Wiley books (Software Assessment: Reliability, Safety, and Testability [1995] and Software Fault Injection: Inoculating Software Against Errors [1998]. He received two U.S. patents and has over 250 publications. Voas received his undergraduate degree in computer engineering from Tulane University (1985), and received his M.S. and Ph.D. in computer science from the College of William and Mary (1986, 1990 respectively). Voas is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Voas received the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Gold medal in 2014 for his efforts in vetting apps for smartphones for U.S. soldiers in mid-East conflicts. Voas’s current research interests include software certification and the underlying science of IoT. Voas is the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Reliability. Voas is an Adjunct Chair Professor of Computer Science at the National Chiao Tung University in Hsinchu, Taiwan.

 

Mathew Greenhouse (NASA)

Matthew Greenhouse has served on the James Webb Space Telescope senior staff as Project Scientist for the JWST science instrument payload since 1997. He specializes in infrared imaging spectroscopy, development of related instrumentation and technologies, flight project science, and technical management.

Dr Greenhouse began work in infrared astronomy during 1979 when, after receiving a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Geosciences from the University of Arizona, he joined the Steward Observatory as an instrument technician for balloon-borne and Kuiper Airborne Observatory science instrument development. During 1983, he joined the Wyoming Infrared Observatory as a graduate student in physics. After receiving a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Wyoming during 1989, he joined the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC as a Federal Civil Service astrophysicist. He then joined the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center during 1996 in the same capacity.

Dr Greenhouse has served on several NASA and European Space Agency (ESA) flight mission teams. He supported ESA’s Infrared Space Observatory mission as a member of the Long Wavelength Spectrometer instrument team. He supported the NASA Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy mission by serving on its Independent Annual Review Board as Co-Chair, and served on both its Interim Management Review Board, and Science Steering Committee. He supported the NASA Spitzer mission by serving on its Community Task Force as Legacy Science Program Chair and the Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 instrument project by serving on numerous gateway technical review boards. Dr. Greenhouse has been a member of the NASA Astrophysics Working Group, and has supported ground-based astronomy through membership on the National Science Foundation Committee of Visitors, and numerous selection committees and review boards for major ground-based instrumentation.Dr Greenhouse began work in infrared astronomy during 1979 when, after receiving a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Geosciences from the University of Arizona, he joined the Steward Observatory as an instrument technician for balloon-borne and Kuiper Airborne Observatory science instrument development. Jin Bains (Head of Connectivity, Facebook)

As the Head of the Connectivity Lab, SCL, Jin oversees and directs key aspects of Facebook’s efforts to increase access to affordable connectivity across the globe, including the use of low-altitude, high-altitude, and satellite systems. Before joining Facebook, Jin spent over ten years at National Instruments, where he served as the Vice President of R&D, RF and Wireless Products, managing a global R&D organization of engineers and driving innovation with internal experts and key outside partners. Jin began his career as an RF Engineer and R&D manager for Hewlett Packard and Agilent Technologies. Jin holds a BS and MS in Electrical Engineering from UC Davis and Stanford, respectively.

 

Gaurav Pandey (Autonomous Vehicles, Ford Motors)

Gaurav is currently leading the automated driving team at Ford Motor Company. They are working on mapping and localization for autonomous vehicles. Gaurav is also a specialist for robotics and Artificial Intelligence and has been actively involved in developing various components for autonomous vehicles. He has also developed techniques for fusion data, and has worked on projects involving object detection, tracking and classification.

 

John Collins (Snap Inc.)

John Collins is a hardware program manager for Microsoft on the HoloLens team in Silicon Valley, leading the research and development of battery technologies for augmented reality products.

Prior to joining HoloLens, John worked as an electrical engineering lead for the motherboard and hard drive for the Xbox 360 and Xbox One and at Apple managing the development of the battery for the iPhone, iPad and iPod line of products.

He has trained hundreds on the processes, tools and best practices necessary to create high volume consumer electronics. He has been an IEEE and Consumer Electronics Society member since 2008 and was president of the IEEE and Eta Kappa Nu electrical engineering honor society student chapters at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

He also cofounded Daily Lovelies with his wife, a startup that provides custom tailored cosmetics for special occasions. He is passionate about consumer electronics and the future of virtual and augmented reality.

 

Dr. Terence S. Yeoh (Aerospace Corporation)

Dr. Terence Yeoh is an assistant principal director at The Aerospace Corporation, overseeing the technical and programmatic details of a systems of systems program. Prior to this, he served in the company’s research and development arm as the R&D Portfolio Manager, giving him broad insight into Aerospace’s innovation portfolio. He joined Aerospace as a staff scientist in 2003.

Yeoh is the cofounder of SeedTECH, an Aerospace community of interest comprising more than 160 Aerospace employees developing technology for the greater good on a volunteer basis. Yeoh is also the team lead for SeedTECH AI, an Aerospace team currently participating in the IBM Watson AI XPRIZE focused on applying artificial intelligence systems to dream new alternatives to today’s problems.

Yeoh currently holds seven patents in areas that include infrared microscopy, 3D surface reconstruction, and compressive sensing.

Yeoh has also been active in advocating virtual reality for mainstream use at Aerospace. He developed and deployed an end-to-end 360 video VR production system for Aerospace’s corporate communications division, and in collaboration with that group produced more than twenty 360 VR tours highlighting Aerospace capabilities. He has also developed portable VR systems for use in technical demonstrations and for recruiting purposes, and has investigated the use of VR software to augment situational awareness during STARS launch activities. Yeoh played a key advisory role in the formation of an interdisciplinary game development team at Aerospace, which uses virtual reality and gaming to visualize complex national security space problems on a variety of digital platforms.

 

Kevin O’Malley (Google Engineering Director)

Kevin O’Malley is the director of engineering education at Google. His group works directly with Google engineering teams to create and deliver technical education on Google internal engineering products to Google engineers. This includes large-scale education programs for Machine Learning, Mobile, languages and engineering practices, storage systems; core Google-wide EDU/documentation libraries and repertoires, and tools that support scaling education. In addition to internal education, his teams also provide large-scale education for Google Cloud’s Advanced Solutions Lab for Machine Learning and many external audiences.

 

Prior to joining Google, Kevin worked at the University of Michigan as Adjunct Lecturer, Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science and as a member of the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, working on distributed decision making through computational markets, computer music, and assistive technologies using Machine Learning. Kevin’s also written a book on software development, was a technical editor for Apress, and has published papers in IEEE Internet Computing, ACM/IEEE 2003 Joint Conference on Digital Libraries, Apple Developer Connection, O’Reilly, and Dr. Dobb’s Journal.

 

Thomas Coughlin (Coughlin Associates)

Tom Coughlin, President, Coughlin Associates is a widely respected digital storage analyst as well as business and technology consultant. He has over 35 years in the data storage industry with multiple engineering and management positions at high profile companies.
Dr. Coughlin has many publications and six patents to his credit. Tom is also the author of Digital Storage in Consumer Electronics: The Essential Guide, which was published by Newnes Press. Coughlin Associates provides market and technology analysis as well as Data Storage Technical and Business Consulting services. Tom publishes the Digital Storage Technology Newsletter, the Media and Entertainment Storage Report, the Emerging Non-Volatile Memory Report and other industry reports. Tom is also a regular contributor on digital storage for Forbes.com and other blogs.
Tom is active with SMPTE, SNIA, the IEEE (he is Director for IEEE Region 6 and active in the Consumer Electronics Society where he is chairman of the Future Directions Committee) and other professional organizations. Tom is the founder and organizer of the Annual Storage Visions Conference (www.storagevisions.com), a partner to the International Consumer Electronics Show, as well as the Creative Storage Conference (www.creativestorage.org). He is the general chairman of the annual Flash Memory Summit. He is a Senior member of the IEEE, Leader in the Gerson Lehrman Group Councils of Advisors and a member of the Consultants Network of Silicon Valley (CNSV). Mark Paulk (IEEE Computer Society DVP)

Dr. Mark Paulk teaches software engineering at the University of Texas at Dallas and is a consultant and author in software engineering, software process improvement, high maturity practices, agile methods, and statistical thinking.

Dr. Paulk was a Senior Systems Scientist at the Institute for Software Research at Carnegie Mellon University, and was with the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon, where he led the work on the Capability Maturity Model for Software. He was co-project editor of ISO/IEC 15504-2 (Software Process Assessment: Baseline Practices Guide), and is the Vice President of the Standards Activities Board for the IEEE Computer Society.

Dr. Paulk received his PhD in industrial engineering from the University of Pittsburgh, his MS in computer science from Vanderbilt University, and his BS in mathematics and computer science from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. He is a Fellow of the ASQ, a Certified ScrumMaster, and a Senior Member of the IEEE.

 

Stephen Guine (Northrop Grumman)

Stephen Guine is a systems engineering manager for Northrop Grumman Aerospace in Palmdale, California. He has over seventeen years of experience implementing and managing systems engineering activities on multiple Northrop Grumman programs and projects as well as for other organizations including Kaiser Permanente, PacifiCare, Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, and the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. He was also the 2015 INCOSE-LA President.

Stephen is also the founder of The Strategy Department — a strategy and systems engineering consulting firm focused on bringing strategic systems thinking and project execution to community-based nonprofit organizations and small businesses. In this capacity, Stephen has over twenty years of experience in business process and technology consulting, information architecture development, strategic planning, and end-user education and training.

Stephen holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of California Santa Barbara, a Master of Public Policy from USC, and an M.B.A. from the Drucker School of Management,. In addition, Stephen has earned certificates in systems engineering and in Aerospace Project Management from Caltech, and a certificate in Digital Avionics from the University of California, Los Angeles. Stephen is a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps.

 

Walter Iu (Northrop Grumman)

Walter Iu is a Systems Engineer at Northrop Grumman Corporation and has worked on a variety of projects such as GPS 3 and NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope. He graduated from the University of Southern California and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering in 2015 and his Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering in 2016 (emphasis in signal processing). Walter has also worked in a variety of fields from Research and Development at Mattel to Financial Services Technology Consulting at PricewaterhouseCoopers. He has been involved with IEEE since 2011.

 

Skyler Nix (ActioNet)

Skyler Nix grew up in Albuquerque, NM and joined the U.S. Army as a 33W Military Intelligence Systems Integrator/Maintainer after graduating high school. During his active duty years he served in 102nd MI Battalion in Camp Essayons, South Korea and 742nd MI Battalion in Fort Meade, MD. Since leaving the military in 2007 he has worked for defense contracting companies in various roles such as electronics installation and maintenance, satellite communications, training development, and software sustainment. He recently graduated from the University of Arizona with a BASc in Network Administration. He has served as the Chair for the Ft. Huachuca Section of IEEE and is a conference committee member for Rising Stars 2018. He currently works as a Unix/Linux Engineer for ActioNet supporting the Department of Energy.

 

Tim Lee (Chair of IEEE SIGHT)

Tim’s interests in IEEE activities that promotes the use of technology that benefit humanitarian needs. Currently, Tim is the Chair of IEEE SIGHT, Co-Chair of the IEEE 5G Initiative, the Chair of the IEEE Internet Inclusion track for the IEEE Internet Initiative and and the Chair of the IEEE Special Interest Group in Humanitarian Technology (SIGHT).

Tim is also a Boeing Technical Fellow, working in Boeing Research and Technology in Southern California. He has over 35 years’ experience in the design of MMICs, microwave components and sub-systems for electronic systems. His interests in IEEE MTT-S include the continued excellence of technical journals and conferences for the microwave engineering communities worldwide and the development of microwave/wireless solutions to benefit humanitarian needs.

 

Mario Miliceviv (MaxLinear Inc.)

Mario Milicevic is a Staff Communication Systems Engineering at MaxLinear Inc., Irvine, CA, where he is responsible for the development of algorithms and system-on-chip architectures for high-performance broadband and networking semiconductor products. He received the Ph.D. degree from the Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Toronto in 2017, where his research focused on the design of error-correction decoders for integrated circuits and quantum cryptography. During his term as Chair of IEEE Young Professionals in 2015 and 2016, Mario focused on the strategic development and delivery of the IEEE Young Professionals program to over 120,000 IEEE members worldwide and across multiple IEEE operating units, including Member and Geographic Activities, Technical Activities, and IEEE-USA.

 

Tinna Gustafson (Engility Corporation)

Tinna has over thirty years of experience within the IT industry, including supervisory program, and project management experience performing Agile Leadership, management, software analysis and design, system implementation, system testing, problem analysis, and process improvement using the Capability Maturity Model/Improved (CMM, CMMI) and Agile/Scrum frameworks.

Tinna directed activities of software engineers for the U.S. Army and Department of Defense (DoD) of Military Intelligence (MI) Analyst and Systems Analyst positions. For over 20 years she has Intelligence Analyst experience from JCIDS documentation, Requirements modeling and simulation, testing at JITC, teaching at Intelligence Center, using in White Cell Operations, and finally managing Intelligence Systems Software teams.

 

William Hurley (Entrepreneur and Open Source Advocate)

William Hurley, is an American entrepreneur and the founder of Chaotic Moon Studios (sold to Accenture), Honest Dollar (sold to Goldman Sachs), and Equals: The Global Partnership for Gender Equality in the Digital Age. He is an open source advocate and systems theorist, and is regularly interviewed by the press on technology and related topics.

 

Carlos Rivera (Interconnection & Power Quality Engineer, Arizona Public Services)

Carlos is attending graduate school at Arizona State University majoring in electrical engineering (with focus in the area of power). He completed his undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from Florida Atlantic University, and is currently working for Arizona Public Services (APS) utility as an Interconnection and Power Quality engineer.

Carlos has worked in the electric industry for the past nine years. He spent four of those years in the Marine Corps as an electrician. After his time in the service he spent two years as an engineering technician with GE Energy and Musco Sport Lighting. Most recently worked as an electrical engineer with The Boeing Company and now APS. Carlos has worked on energy storage, photovoltaic and co-generation interconnection project throughout the state of Arizona. He is currently the lead interconnection engineer on a 2MW battery storage project. Carlos also aids internal and external utility customers in resolving any/all power quality related issued that might be caused by renewables, customer equipment, or utility disturbances.

 

Shelly R Born (Senior Engineer, Arizona Public Service)

Mrs. Born is a Senior Engineer with 26 years of electrical engineering experience in the Electric Utility industry. Currently she is on the Interconnection and Power Quality Engineering team at Arizona Public Service (APS).  She ensures safe and reliable interconnection of generation projects to the APS grid. This can include microgrids, solar, wind, back-up generators, and battery storage systems.  Recently she worked with TESLA in meeting interconnection requirements for their Powerwall 2 applications.

Previously, Shelly was the SCADA lead on remote infrastructure for the Advanced Distribution Management System recently implemented by APS and for the first S&C 6-way VISTA underground switchgear installation. She was the SCADA engineer for the 12kV Smart Grid implementation in Flagstaff, AZ.  She has a foundational background in system protection and substation controls engineering.

Shelly was very active in Professional Activities of the IEEE and was the first woman elected to the IEEE-USA BoD as Member-At-Large.  She earned a BSEE from the University of Evansville.

 

Michael Condry (Former Chief Technical Officer, Client Division, Intel and currently President of the Technology and Engineering Management Society (TEMS))

Michael is currently the co-founder and vice chairman of the board for the Global Alliance for Innovators and Entrepreneurs, a new association to advise innovators on product creation opportunities. Formally, Michael was the Chief Technical Officer for Intel Corporation, Global Ecosystem Division. His career has a mixture of academic and industry positions, mostly in industry. Holding teaching and research positions at Princeton and University of Illinois, at Illinois he lead an internet application research team contributing findings to the US Internet committee under Al Gore. His industry roles included AT&T Bell-Labs, Sun Microsystems, and Intel. At Bell Labs he was a co-architect for the Bellmac-32 processor and co-designed the System V Inode File System whose successors are in use today. At Sun he led standards for the Solaris/UNIX team founding the Open Group to enable these standards. Michael came to Intel to head up Networking Applications research in Intel Labs. Michael’s CTO role drove on customer innovation, design cost reduction, and other technologies and leading technical staff development. He led efforts to help the customer with system design and security. This plus efforts in technical staff development at Intel awarded him and his team the prestigious Intel Quality Award in 2015. His background includes projects in computer architecture, software, firmware, operating systems, networking, IoT, internet applications, standards, and computer security.  Michael retired from Intel in June 2015.

Michael has patents in computer architecture and security. He has published many technical papers and regularly presents keynotes at technical conferences.

Michael is the President of the IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Society (TEMS).  Michael is a senior board member for the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IES), he created and chairs the IEEE Industry Forum series that has successfully engaged industry in over 14 conferences.  Michael is also a member of the IEEE Computer Society for over 27 years. He has chaired many IEEE conferences as well as the Industry Forum program.

 

Dr. Matthias Hoeh (EOS)

Dr. Matthias Hoeh is a physicist and entrepreneur. He was a scientist at Heidelberg University, Germany from 2008 to 2012. He was then working for Konica Minolta as a product manager, responsible for test systems in electronics manufacturing. In 2016 Matthias entered the world of industrial 3D printing. For EOS, the leading manufacturer of solutions in additive manufacturing, he is global business development manager for industrial applications and the electronics industry.

 

Kyla Bonnstetter (Top Talent Consulting )

Kyla has over 14 years of diverse corporate experience from Fortune 500 companies like Hewlett-Packard, & Campbell Soup Company. Recently, she developed a job placement program for US veterans to honor their service and help them through transition in finding a new career/job.

During her 10 year consulting career, she has had the privilege to learn and work with some of the world’s elite consultants and is part of the Odyssey World Consulting Group.

 

Jennifer Hunter  (PM at Microsoft)

Growing up, she always found herself leading group projects and being the connector between friend groups. As a program manager for Microsoft, Jennifer professionalize those skills by connecting with our UX designers, software developers, and customers to build a world-class operations management technology and by representing my products at conferences around the world.

She is a highly creative, results-oriented technology professional, who believes in the value of leadership within the engineering industry. In her own time, she works to encourage women and minorities to stay within the engineering display through her efforts previously with the Intel sponsored Stay With It Squad and now as Chair of the IEEE Seattle Section Women in Engineering (WIE) chapter.

 

Catherine Nelson (Program Manager at Google)

Catherine has been in the high tech for 25+ years and has a wide background of management, technical, business and disaster response skills.

She is a Security Expert, specializing in Internet application and network security, security audits, penetration testing, security hardening and secure coding guidelines. She has been a Product Manager for Security Intelligence products dealing with vulnerabilities and IPS. She also has a patent pending for Security Risk Management. Recently she’s been working with mobile device and cloud security.

As an engineer on the Cisco Disaster Response Team she specialized in disaster and mobile communications. She provided engineering expertise, logistical support, responder training and was the primary developer of incident management tools.

She is a Product Manager, managing products across the entire life-cycle including product requirements, business development, market forecasting, and budget management. She also spent a number of years doing acquisition integration.

Catherine is an overall general purpose techie which means I keep up on current technologies, and can learn pretty much anything that crosses my path.I program in multiple languages and have a strong system and network administration background.

 

Andrew Rush (President of Made In Space, Inc)

Andrew Rush is the president of Silicon Valley-based Made In Space, Inc. He oversees the operations, business development, and strategy of Made In Space as it continues to push boundaries at the forefront of in-space manufacturing, 3D printing in space, at sea, and in other extreme environments, and space colonization-related technologies.

Previously, Andrew was an intellectual property attorney. He was one of the few intellectual property lawyers nationally with established industry specializations in aerospace and additive manufacturing. While in private practice, he was named partner before the age of 30 and became involved with Made In Space as General Counsel and manager of the company’s intellectual property portfolio.

Andrew has also worked with Masten Space Systems. Before becoming an attorney, he was a research assistant in a solid state physics laboratory.

Andrew holds a B.S. in physics and a J.D. from Stetson University.
